Pain After Cataract Eye Surgery Is To Be Expected
You have just had the cataracts removed from your eyes but you are experiencing pain after cataract eye surgery. You are concerned and think that something is wrong. Pain occurs after cataract eye surgery?
Extreme pain after cataract eye surgery is normal. but more discomfort of some sort. It is normal to feel itching and mild discomfort for a while after eye muscle surgery. In most cases there will be some fluid discharge. This is very common, and you may find that your eyes are extremely sensitive to light and touch.
After a day or 2 you should not have pain after cataract eye surgery and even moderate discomfort should disappear. In most cases, healing should take about 6 weeks.
Discomfort And Pain After Cataract Eye Surgery
After surgery you will be given anti-inflammatory eye drops and antibiotics to ensure that your eye doesn’t get infected. If you need them, you can take over-the-counter painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen.
There are ways to minimise the pain after cataract surgery. It is advisable to wear an eye patch at night and you may even wear one during the day for the first few days to help protect the eye and avoid rubbing or pressing on your eye. Rubbing or pressing on the eye is a normal reaction. We rub our eyes when they itch normally don’t we? In addition to this you may rub your eyes while sleeping.
Constant rubbing and touching of the eye will cause pain after cataract surgery and should be avoided. It is not absolutely necessary to wear the patch during the day and should you choose not to wear the eye patch it may be advisable to wear your normal eye glasses instead.
Preparation For Surgery
In order to prep you for the surgery you will be given eye drops to dilate the pupil. The Doctor will ensure that the entire area around your eye is cleansed and made sterile. In addition to this, sterile coverings will be placed around your head.
Eye muscle surgery usually lasts for about 30 minutes. It is an almost painless procedure. Most people will choose to stay awake during eye muscle surgery and will have an anaesthetic to numb the nerves in and around the eye area. Drops may be put in the eye and the eye will have to be kept still once the drops go in.
During Surgery
During eye muscle surgery an instrument known as a lid speculum will hold the lids open so there is no need to worry about keeping your eyes open. Visibility of light and movement during eye muscle surgery occurs but no discomfort will be experienced at all.
After Surgery
After the eye muscle surgery, an eye patch will be placed over your eye and you will rest for a while. Most people who have eye muscle surgery will be permitted to go home the same day. You will not be able to drive, so always make sure you make arrangements in order to be able to get home.
